I am a fine artist from the UK. I primarily work with metallic and pearlescent acrylic paints, layering them over black backgrounds to create paintings with shiny and lustrous surfaces. I'm interested in the fact that the paintings will only show their full sheen in specific lighting conditions and viewing angles, the same luminous painting can look quite different depending entirely on the light around it. This also adds a challenge of painting objects so they can appear exactly as I want them to from all angles and whether light is directly on them or not.
The scale of my work is generally quite small which forces the composition to be focused on one or two objects and a close up of a background. My inspiration for this type of composition is largely influenced by close-up shots in films. Cinema, nostalgia, and personal taste and experiences are some of the main inspirations behind my artwork. The imagery and colour I use is largely dictated by my own tastes.
The compositions are created by blending images of my personal belongings with imagined backgrounds or imagery from films. I aim to capture specific objects in a fairly realistic manner, but for the composition as a whole I want the image to feel a little more dream-like or simulated rather than being an exact life-like copy of the real thing.
The paintings often seem to have a slight sense of unease about them, although this is not always intentional. Objects are captured in a snapshot, and suspended in a specific place which doesn't necessarily have a natural feel to it. I utilise stark black backgrounds or close cropped backgrounds often of curtains or material which provide little wider context, therefore the viewer is left to draw their own conclusions on meanings. Titles are used intentionally to provide or simply suggest some context to the work.
